Lung Cancer Metastasis: Novel Biological Mechanisms and Impact on Clinical Practice, 1st ed. 2009

Lung Cancer Metastasis: Novel Biological Mechanisms and Impact on Clinical Practice
Venkateshwar Keshamouni, Douglas Arenberg, and Gregory Kalemkerian
ISBN-10: 1441907718
ISBN-13: 978-1441907714
Springer

Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related mortality. Metastatic lung cancer is responsible for more than ninety percent of lung cancer related deaths. However, relatively little progress has been made in understanding the process of lung cancer metastasis. The two main aims of this book are a) to introduce clinical aspects to basic scientists and basic molecular and cellular concepts to clinical investigators, in order to promote collaboration and foster much needed translational research; and b) to introduce new and emerging concepts and approaches in metastasis research to lung cancer research community at large.
In this attempt, the book will cover a broad spectrum of subjects ranging from the current trends in the clinical management of the metastatic disease, to the systems biology approach for gaining insights into the mechanisms of metastasis. Some of the subjects covered will include: defining basic hallmarks of a metastatic cell, the concept of tumor stem cells, epithelial-mesenchymal transitions, evasion of immune-surveillance, tumor-stromal interactions, angiogenesis, molecular imaging and biomarker discovery.

ISBN-10: 038789909X
ISBN-13: 978-0387899091
Springer

This work focuses on the background, collection technique, and reliability of endometrial cytology; it then overviews diagnostic criteria and diagnostic pitfalls encountered in the day-to-day practice of the art. Since endometrial cytology interpretation relies on intuiting tissue patterns from cytology preparations, a great deal of time is spent on cytohistological correlations and, where effective as part of a diagnostic strategy, on ancillary immunohistochemical staining. The discussion moves from normal states of the endometrium, through otherwise benign changes induced by an altered hormonal milieu or surface irritants, into neoplastic premalignant and malignant endometrial conditions. Finally, fixative and slide preparation techniques, that we deem as expeditious while serving to get the most information out of an endometrial cytology collection, are discussed in detail for the benefit of those who wish to recapitulate our work in their own practice.

Primary liver cancer is the third most deadly and fifth most common cancer worldwide (~500,000 deaths annually), with a sharp increase of incidence in the United States in recent years. Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and cholangiocarcinoma (CC) are the major types of primary liver cancer. Risk factors include gender, hepatitis B virus (HBV), hepatitis C virus (HCV), cirrhosis, metabolism diseases, diabetes, obesity, toxins, excess alcohol consumption and smoking. Liver cancer arises most frequently in inflammatory livers with extensive oxidative stress due to viral hepatitis which causes over 80% of HCC cases worldwide. Currently, survival remains dismal for most HCC and CC patients, largely due to the tumor’s aggressiveness at the time of diagnosis and the lack of effective therapy.

Atlas of Medical Parasitology
S. K. Rai, S. Uga, N. Kataoka, T. Matsumura

Inspite of tremendous advancement made in the field of infectious diseases during past, many problems still remain. Of the various types of infectious diseases, parasitic infections yet constitute one of the major public health problem particularly in developing countries in tropical and sub-tropical areas. Many people in these areas are suffering from one or more than one parasitic infections and their sequelae. This has been attributed to low socio-economic standards, poor sanitary facilities, Iow education level and limited diagnostic facilities. Rapid and unplanned urbanization has also been found to be associated with the increase of parasitoses. In addition, increasing international travel and business have also contributed to the spread of parasitic diseases in countries once considered to have no or very low rate of parasitic infections. Therefore, the importance of parasitic diseases once said to be confined in developing countries is now emerging in developed countries as well. This atlas has been prepared with an aim to provide a guide to the students of medical sciences and to newly qualified medical practitioners in diagnosing the parasitic diseases.

New to this edition are: the addition of a transplantation chapter, which covers general immunologic mechanisms and pathologic features of transplant rejection, organ-specific transplantation pathology (kidney, liver, heart, lung, bone marrow), graft-versus host disease, and complications of transplantation; K-type questions have been eliminated and replaced by case-based or clinically oriented questions; and a moderate increase in tables and diagrams, to "break-up" dense outlined text. The NMS outline format provides a logical organization of pathology concepts and eliminates unnecessary words and detail.

Benirschke and Kaufmann's Pathology of the Human Placenta, now in its Fourth Edition, has long been regarded as the gold standard in the field. It is comprehensive and thorough and contains the detail necessary for those in the subspecialties of placental, perinatal and pediatric pathology. However, placentas are relatively common specimens and are not examined primarily by specialists in the field, but by general pathologists. Thus, there is a need for a more practical and concise manual that can be used by pathology trainees and generalists in their daily work. Manual of Benirschke and Kaufmann's Pathology of the Human Placenta will fill that need. The Manual is a practical, user-friendly guidebook for the general pathologist and pathologist in training for everyday, bench-side use. Organized in 26 chapters, the book will discuss placental development, general features, approach to the specimen by macroscopic and microscopic evaluation, all aspects of placental abnormalities and lesions, disease processes and the placenta, legal aspects of the placental examination, future directions and much more. The sections on macroscopic and microscopic evaluations feature quick-reference tables that allow the reader to identify abnormalities, learn the situations where they occur, and refer back to the text for in-depth discussions. Each chapter will end with selected readings from Pathology of the Human Placenta for more detailed discussions, classic recommended readings, as well as an up-to-date bibliography of current literature. The manual features over 350 illustrations, more than 140 of them in full-color. A must-have for every pathologist and pathology resident.

Chemokine Receptors and NeuroAIDS: Beyond Co-Receptor Function and Links to Other Neuropathologies, 1st ed. 2010

Chemokine Receptors and NeuroAIDS: Beyond Co-Receptor Function and Links to Other Neuropathologies
Olimpia Meucci
ISBN-10: 1441907920
ISBN-13: 978-1441907929
Springer

Chemokine Receptors and NeuroAIDS: Beyond the Co-receptor Function and Links to Other Neuropathologies focuses on unresolved or emerging issues concerning the role of chemokine receptors in neuronal injury and HIV neuropathology, including their ability to regulate fundamental neuronal and glial functions and their role in neurovirulence and neurotoxicity. Although the importance of these molecules in the CNS physiology and pathology is now apparent, these issues are still matter of debate, and further research is required to design effective pharmacological agents that specifically target the brain chemokine system without major side effects.
To this end, specific topics have been selected and are reviewed by international experts within the basic science/medical community. This book encourages investigation in the most controversial areas and fosters interaction between clinicians and basic scientists. The book also increases awareness about differences in disease progression among different parts of the world as well as selected patient populations, which may also help identifying novel therapeutic strategies.

Hodgkin Lymphoma: A Comprehensive Update on Diagnostics and Clinics, 1st ed. 2011

Hodgkin Lymphoma: A Comprehensive Update on Diagnostics and Clinics
(Hematologic Malignancies)
Andreas Engert and Sandra J. Horning
ISBN-10: 3642127797
ISBN-13: 978-3642127793
Springer

This book provides a well-illustrated, comprehensive, and up-to-date account of Hodgkin lymphoma. Epidemiology, pathogenesis, and the role of the microenvironment are examined in detail. The initial clinical evaluation and use of staging systems are fully discussed, and prognostic factors are carefully considered. The various treatment options for first-line and relapsed Hodgkin lymphoma are presented, including the newly available treatments for recurrent disease and the management required in special clinical circumstances. Given the very high cure rates and the young age of many patients, there is an increasing need to develop better individually tailored treatment strategies that will help to avoid both early and late side-effects of treatment. Such strategies receive due attention, and clear guidance is provided on the handling of Hodgkin survivors. This book will be of great value to hematologists, oncologists, and all others with an interest in Hodgkin lymphoma.
