ISBN-13: 978-1461400424

Frozen Section Library: Liver, Extrahepatic Biliary Tree and Gallbladder provides a convenient reference for use during intraoperative consultation. The volume addresses commonly encountered challenges, such as the diagnosis of primary and secondary hepatic neoplasms and assessment of gross abnormalities of the gallbladder. The assessment of frozen section biopsies for liver transplantation, a challenging and increasingly encountered situation, is detailed in the form of histologic criteria that should be reported. Emphasis is placed on the differential diagnoses of gross and microscopic findings with attention to potential pitfalls and artifacts encountered on frozen section. gross and microscopic images are provided as well as user-friendly tables for quick reference.

Frozen Section Library: Central Nervous System, 2011

Frozen Section Library: Central Nervous System

ISBN-10: 1441975780
ISBN-13: 978-1441975782
Springer

Frozen section of Neuropathology-related cases is performed while the patient is undergoing surgery. Intraoperative consultation is used to help guide intraoperative management of the case and to ensure that adequate and appropriate tissue has been obtained for purposes of making an accurate final diagnosis. Frozen section diagnosis is often a highly demanding situation for the pathologist, who must render a diagnosis quickly and provide sound guidance and advice. In addition to the need for rapid recall of differential diagnoses, there are many pitfalls and artifacts that add to the risk of frozen section diagnosis that are not present with permanent sections of fully processed tissue that can be examined in a more leisurely fashion. Most standard pathology textbooks focus primarily on permanent section material and largely ignore the topic of frozen section. The purpose of this volume is to add to the Frozen Section Library series and provide a convenient, user friendly handbook to assist in the evaluation of central nervous system related frozen sections. It provides a useful reference, organized around differential diagnoses, primarily by location in the central nervous system. The text will be illustrated with color pictures and include tables as appropriate. This text provides a valuable tool for the practicing surgical pathologist both in community and in academic centers as well as pathology residents and fellows in training when confronted with Neuropathology frozen section.

This is an age of enlightenment in surgical pathology, and the authors of this new volume have captured this sense of excitement herein. This much praised and widely used reference manual on has been extensively revised and expanded to cover the entire field of anatomic pathology. The Third Edition features the incorporation of full-color images in the text with updates of new diagnostic and prognostic information. New classifications and numerous new entities and histologic variants are fully explored. Useful immunostaining biomarkers and emerging molecular targets and relevant molecular findings that have emerged from recent genomic studies are incorporated in each chapter. Written by internationally recognized authorities, the comprehensive, evidence-based practice information is presented in an outline format that is clear and easy to follow. Up-to-date and richly detailed, Essentials of Anatomic Pathology, Third Edition offers both the pathologist-in-training and the practicing pathologist a concise summary of all the critical information needed to recognize, understand and interpret anatomic pathology.

Immunoassays: A Practical Approach, 1st ed. 2000

Immunoassays A Practical Approach 2000
James P. Gosling
ISBN-10: 0199637105
ISBN-13: 978-0199637102

Immunoassays is the first practical volume designed to help any biologist develop an immunoassay of any common format for any suitable analyte. The basic principles are described and the choices of assay types and formats listed. Methods for raising and for characterizing antibodies, for preparing radioactive, enzymatic, fluorescent and other labels, are described. Solid-phase reagents, standards and immunogens are explained, with procedures for their preparation. But most components can be obtained commercially and comprehensive lists of suppliers are given. Approaches to combining the reagents and optimizing the required assay are described, including how to eliminate common interferences, and thorough validation procedures are given. Manual and computer methods for the calculation of concentrations are explained. Since only assays that are within control give valid results, a graded and comprehensive approach to internal and external quality assurance methods is detailed, including how to prepare control samples.

Macrophages: A Practical Approach, 1st ed. 2000

Macrophages: A Practical Approach 2000
Donna M. Paulnock
ISBN-10: 9780199636884
ISBN-13: 978-0199636884

Macrophages are an important part of the immune response and are characterized by their ability to phagocytose foreign matter. However the difficulties involved in macrophage isolation mean they are some of the body's least explored cells. Macrophage Methodology describes how to isolate moderate to high yields of viable cells from a variety of specific tissue sites under both normal and pathological conditions and then goes on to give protocols for macrophage purification. The third chapter covers techniques used to identify and measure endocytic and phagocytic capabilities using immunochemistry and fluorescent analysis. Chapter four identifies the key issues relating to the study of macrophages as antigen presenting cells and has protocols for the major assays used to measure antigen processing and presentation. Also covered are the theoretical and practical issues related to the processing and presentation of intracellular pathogens for which macrophages are the major host cell. The methods described for measuring macrophage secretory products concentrate on bioassays for molecules where no ELISA is available. The next two chapters cover measuring macrophage activity in vitro and in vivo. Finally methods are described for the analysis of gene expression in macrophages. A variety of broad techniques have been brought together in one affordable volume to make Macrophage Methodology an essential buy for anyone studying macrophages.
